What is Imposter Syndrome?

Imposter syndrome is a psychological phenomenon. It causes a person to doubt their abilities and worry about looking like as a fraud, despite evidence of their skills.

People with imposter syndrome often attribute their achievements to luck, good timing, or having deceived others. They focus on negative feedback or mistakes they’ve made.

Imposter syndrome is most often felt by high-achievers and intelligent people.

Our founder, Sophia Ruffolo, feels it all the time.

How It Affects You

You know too well the effects of feeling like an imposter. Feelings of failure and self-doubt shatter confidence. They prevent you from exploring new opportunities and interests.

They stop you from going for money-making roles. They drain your energy.

What’s worse? The stress of it all affects physical health. You will start to burn out, develop increased anxiety, or get stress-related illnesses.

Tips For Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

Enough is enough. Here are our 5 tips to stop imposter syndrome in its tracks.

Name It

Keeping it inside is doing you no favours. Talking about it is how we move past it.

Imposter syndrome thrives on secrecy and feeling like you’re all alone.

So let us clear the air for you: You are not alone. Look around the room you’re in. See her over there? She’s felt it too. What about them? Yep. Same.

Sophia spoke with other CEOs on International Women’s Day and so many of them shared this fear. Sharing your imposter syndrome actually takes away its power.

Feel It

After you reveal your imposter syndrome, talk about the feelings behind it.

Why do you feel like you don’t deserve your successes?

Why do you worry about being seen as a fraud?

What negative feedback are you holding onto?

Sharing these thoughts allows others to help you tackle them. You can use a mentor, a therapist, or your friends.
Establish a support network where you can share your feelings and counter them. (we have one support network in mind!)

Reframe Your Negative Thoughts

Reframe the negative thoughts as they come into your mind.

Instead of thinking “I might fail,” see if it’s possible to change the thought to “I might do well.”

Removing the doubt from your mind increases your confidence and makes you feel more prepared.

Try to stop comparing yourself to others. Remember that you are your own person on your unique journey.

Write Down Your Accomplishments and Skills

Make a tangible list of your successes that will help you disprove your negative thoughts.

Show them what you’ve done! (news flash: it’s a LOT).

The list can include your academics, personality traits, career successes, or positive aspects of your life. These are things that you are proud of that prove that you deserve your successes.

Update the list to keep it relevant and to help remind yourself of how much you have achieved. Why not post it beside your bed, or save a file on your desktop?

Develop a Mantra that Reminds You of Your Power

Take a moment before a stressful scenario to remind yourself that you are capable and worthy. Invent a mantra that you repeat in these situations. Strike a power pose to instill yourself with confidence. Sophia does this before big meetings. She find the closest washroom, goes inside, and poses like wonder woman.

Do whatever you need to do to squash those negative thoughts.

Then go out there and kill it!
